MountainSanctuary

Northern Rockies, USA

Perched on a dramatic clifftop in the northern Rockies, this 13,000 sq ft residence serves as both a home and private hunting lodge. The client desired a traditional log cabin aesthetic, but with no compromises in the energy efficiency or performance of the exterior walls, and maximum flexibility for interior finishes.

To achieve this, the project employed a dual-wall system: a traditional log exterior resting on a stone plinth, and a conventionally framed interior structural wall. This approach provided both complete freedom for interior materials, and exceptional thermal performance.

A golden clay roof tile was chosen to echo the yellow bursts of surrounding aspen groves in autumn. At the heart of the home, a log-truss roof structure spans the central wing, fully expressed on the interior. The Great Room’s central window was engineered to fully retract behind the upper transom window, extending the living space directly onto the cliffside terrace, dissolving the boundary between shelter and landscape.
